Possible Installation Considerations

Possible Installation Considerations

So in the previous post, I talked about my biggest problem at the moment being the installation of my final product. Again, I don’t have a solid idea just yet, but I’m considering a variety of options and will consult people that have worked with bizarre mount systems before.

So here’s some highlights of what I have to keep in mind with this piece:

  • Be conscientious of the mess made by my sand. A catch-tray under the perimeter of my installation piece may be necessary, or installing outside. Perhaps raised edges on the side of my box will make the installation a little cleaner?
  • How much light is in my environment. The more light that enters a space, the less I will be able to control how visible my piece is. I might have to build a dark room for this to work the best. I wonder if having raised edges on the sides of my sandbox will help block excess light?
  • Freaking Cats. Sometimes the resident artists bring their animals into the gallery, and cats are known for using sand to bury fun little surprises.  Perhaps I could rig the sides of the box to spray water if it senses something there, so people can use it to wash the sand off their hands and possibly pack the sand more efficiently?
  • Mounting the Kinect/Projector combo. This is expected to be the most difficult task in this project, as the ceilings are rather high in the gallery and made of cement, so my original “off the ceiling” concept is unlikely to work. Constructing a Gazebo/Darkroom and hanging the setup from the top of one of those might be my best bet. hanging it from the side of one of the freestanding walls is an option Brian Leister and I have talked about as well. I found a suggestion online that I might be able to hang a mirror above the installation and bounce the projection, but that may be more trouble than it’s worth. I also have to consider how to power the piece, and perhaps more importantly, how to keep all of the power cords out of way.

Whatever I choose to do, it has to be inviting yet dark enough for projections, and most importantly, safe to enter and interact with.
